For brands investing in social media, building an audience is an ongoing challenge. Publishing good content matters, but getting that content—and the account behind it—in front of more of the right people often requires an additional push.
One Acorn Woods Communications client wanted to make audience growth a priority, particularly on Instagram. We developed a three-month paid Meta campaign designed to increase profile visits and attract new followers.
By the end of the campaign, the client’s Instagram following had grown by 49.5%. New follower acquisition increased 700% compared with the previous quarter, while profile visits rose 480%.
And the growth extended beyond the followers directly attributed to the ads.
Giving the Right People a Reason to Follow
A follower growth campaign needs to answer a simple question: Why should someone want this account in their feed?
We developed a messaging strategy around the interests of different audience segments, then built creative that gave each segment a relevant reason to visit the profile and follow.
The campaign paired those messages with paid distribution through Meta, helping the client reach prospective followers beyond its existing audience.
Three Months of Significant Instagram Growth
During the campaign quarter, the client achieved:
- 49.5% growth in total Instagram followers
- 700% more new followers than the previous quarter
- 480% more profile visits than the previous quarter
The distinction between total audience growth and new follower acquisition matters. The account grew by nearly half in three months, while the number of new followers acquired was eight times the previous quarter’s total.
Approximately 50% of the new followers were attributed to the paid campaign. The remaining half came organically.
That split is especially interesting. Paid campaigns can deliver followers directly while also creating more opportunities for people to discover and engage with an account organically. We regularly see this pattern in audience growth campaigns: paid activity contributes to the immediate goal, alongside a broader increase in activity and visibility.
In this case, organic acquisition represented a substantial share of the overall result.
Growth Extended to Facebook
Although Facebook follower growth was not a direct campaign objective, the client’s Facebook page also gained momentum during the same period.
The page recorded:
- 3% growth in total followers
- 140% more new followers than the previous quarter
- More than twice the average monthly new followers recorded across the previous two quarters
Virtually none of those new Facebook followers were attributed to the paid campaign.
These results point to a broader benefit worth watching when evaluating paid social: growth and activity elsewhere in a brand’s social presence can accompany a campaign focused on one platform.
Looking Beyond Direct Campaign Results
Direct attribution is an essential part of campaign reporting, but it doesn’t always capture the full picture.
For this client, the paid campaign contributed roughly half of the new Instagram followers. Looking at the account’s overall performance revealed substantial organic acquisition as well, plus increased follower growth on Facebook.
The lesson is to evaluate both the campaign and the surrounding account activity. Profile visits, total follower growth, organic acquisition, and performance across related channels can help reveal a fuller picture of what happened during the investment.
A focused paid campaign can be a practical way to accelerate audience growth when it gives relevant audiences a clear reason to follow. This campaign demonstrates the potential—and the value of measuring beyond the ad dashboard.
